Specialty drugs require education prior to use and patients often receive special patient monitoring and handling,
Specialty medications are generally prescribed for people with complex or ongoing medical conditions such as multiple sclerosis, hemophilia, hepatitis C and rheumatoid arthritis. These high cost medications also have one or more of the following characteristics: injected or infused, but some may be taken by mouth; unique storage or shipment requirements; additional education and support required from a health care professional; and usually not stocked at retail pharmacies. Hemophilia is subject to specialty drug programs when covered under the pharmacy benefit only.
Office Administered Therapies
We know that specialty pharmaceuticals may require special handling or storage and are expensive to carry in your office. As the demand for high-cost specialty medications becomes higher, physicians are struggling to manage the costs associated with their increased use.
The Horizon BCBS Specialty Pharmaceutical Program helps physicians conveniently obtain medications they need for their patients. Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield contracted with specialty pharmaceutical providers that can directly provide your office with specialty medications.
Specialty pharmaceuticals are typically used to treat conditions such as:
