Doctor Appointment Checklist
You and your doctor are a team. People who have a strong relationship with their doctors tend to be healthier and more satisfied with their care. Here are some tips to get the most from your next doctor's visit.
Preparing for an appointment during COVID-19
Staying healthy – especially now as the COVID-19 public health emergency continues and with the flu season coming – means getting routine preventive care. Don’t let concerns about COVID-19 stop you from getting the care you need. When a telemedicine visit is not right for your situation, you can be confident that doctors are doing everything they can to keep you safe.
Follow these six tips to get ready for your next doctor’s appointment:
- Call your doctor to find out if there are special instructions. For example, you may not be allowed to bring anyone with you to your appointment.
- Call when you arrive. You may have to wait in your car or outside of the office. And, be sure to follow social distancing requirements.
- Send a copy of your member ID card and other paperwork in advance. Many doctors’ offices may accept this information via email or other secure methods. You can view and share your member ID card when signed in to the Horizon Blue app and HorizonBlue.com.
- Wear a mask and bring your own hand sanitizer or wipes. Avoid touching your face and clean your hands immediately after leaving.
- Avoid contact with frequently touched surfaces like doorknobs and handrails. Wear gloves or use a paper towel or tissue to open doors and press elevator buttons.
- If you need a prescription, ask your pharmacist if home delivery or curbside pickup is available.
While it’s natural to be concerned about COVID-19, you can stay safe while getting the care you need.
Before you go
- Know your medical history. Bring along medical information, such as test results and medications you are taking, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications and herbal supplements.
- Use this helpful list of questions to ask your doctor if you have any concerns about your symptoms, condition and treatment.
During your appointment
- Discuss your current symptoms and go over your list of questions or concerns.
- Make sure you understand what your doctor is telling you. Don’t be afraid to ask questions about something you don’t understand or something your doctor hasn’t covered.
After your appointment
Taking care of your health doesn’t end when you leave your doctor’s office. Ask yourself, Did my doctor:
- Schedule any follow-up appointments before I left the office?
- Talk with me about my symptoms so that I understand the information provided?
- Actively listen to and address my concerns in terms I understand?
- Encourage me to participate in making choices about treatment options?
- Ensure that I understand the medicines I’m taking, including how to take them and possible side effects?
- Summarize my plan of treatment, tests and any follow-up care?
