COVID-19 Update: Authorizations Waived for Oxygen Following ER Discharge
On May 27, 2020, Horizon BCBSNJ extended the date of these prior authorization changes with updates, from May 31, 2020 to June 30, 2020.
To help hospitals treat patients efficiently and maximize inpatient capacity during the COVID-19 pandemic, authorization for supplemental oxygen (O2) for all patients who are discharged from the Emergency Room (ER) is not required.
Physicians may order home oxygen for a period of 30 days, at their discretion, without first obtaining an authorization through the Horizon Care@Home program, administered by CareCentrix.
To assist with this effort, effective immediately CareCentrix will:
- Waive prior authorization requirements for oxygen for patients who are discharged from the ER, regardless of diagnosis, for a period of 30 days.
- Require an additional physician order to continue supplemental home oxygen only after the initial 30-day period, if required.
These changes are effective until June 30, 2020, subject to extension as the COVID-19 pandemic evolves.
Additionally, CareCentrix will re-evaluate authorizations for oxygen for members discharged from the hospital over the past two weeks and adjust accordingly.
