Helping our communities in need
Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey (Horizon BCBSNJ) and The Horizon Foundation for New Jersey (The Foundation) are committed to helping our members, communities and local businesses get through these difficult times and supporting and developing initiatives that focus on specific preventive health issues.
Addressing health disparities in vulnerable communities is more important than ever. That’s why The Foundation is committed to partnering with nonprofit organizations that help improve the health and quality of life for communities throughout New Jersey.
Helping New Jersey’s Communities
This year, The Foundation awarded 86 grants totaling $2.9M to New Jersey-based nonprofit organizations.
Nonprofit organizations have been significantly disrupted and hit hard by the pandemic straining their limited resources. In response to COVID-19, The Foundation, as part of our total giving for the year, awarded $816,000 in grants to address food insecurity, provide basic needs, including health and mental health services, and help first responders with childcare services.
Additionally, to help address the serious shortage of critical personal protection equipment and other immediate needs, Horizon BCBSNJ donated:
- $2.35 million to purchase 500,000 N95 respirator masks and 81,000 face shields for Governor Murphy’s coordinated response effort.
- $2 million to The New Jersey Pandemic Relief Fund, the response and support organization established by Tammy Murphy, New Jersey’s First Lady.
We also supported doctors, hospitals and other health care professionals by reallocating resources and providing additional financial support. We worked with our local restaurants and purchased 1,300 meals for frontline heroes, including health care professionals, police officers and firefighters in northern New Jersey.
Our employees have also graciously donated their time and financial resources to nonprofit organizations. Since the pandemic began, many Horizon BCBSNJ employees have volunteered at in-person events with The Community FoodBank of New Jersey and The Salvation Army at locations throughout the state for a total of 592 hours.
And recently, Horizon BCBSNJ employees donated more than $11,000 for an online food drive, exceeding our goal, to support The Community FoodBank of New Jersey’s ongoing COVID-19 relief efforts. In addition, our Matching Gifts Program will provide more than $500,000 in employee gift matches serving hundreds of nonprofits.
The Foundation’s mission is to support organizations and communities that make New Jersey healthier, and as COVID-19 resurges, we will continue to address these challenges. Remember, we’re in this together. We are here for our members, communities and local businesses, now and always.
