ePrescribe Medications

We encourage prescribers to use ePrescriptions for all medications, including opioids.

Since 2010, New Jersey law has allowed ePrescribing for controlled substance medications, but many doctors do not use ePrescribing for opioids.

ePrescriptions increase patient safety by identifying over-prescribing as well as patients who are receiving controlled substance medications from multiple prescribers. Additionally, ePrescribing helps prevent fraud by ensuring that the prescription has not been tampered with prior to receipt by the pharmacy.

HCS encourages doctors and other health care professionals to register with eRx, a free ePrescribing solution provided by the National ePrescribing Patient Safety Initiative (NEPSI).
