We know that understanding health insurance is not always easy. Paying your premium on time is critical to keeping your health coverage.
Insurance Bought Through GetCoveredNJ (the state-based health insurance exchange) with the Advanced Premium Tax Credit (APTC)
Your premium payment is due on the first day of each month. If Horizon does not receive your payment by the first day of the month, you will be considered delinquent and a three-month grace period begins. This means you have three months to pay your balance in full before you lose your coverage. If your account is not paid in full by that time, you will be responsible for the full payment of all health care costs incurred during that time.
To be eligible for the three-month grace period, you must have:
- Purchased your health coverage through GetCoveredNJ (the state-based health insurance exchange)
- Paid at least the first month’s premium payment in full for the current benefit year
- Received an advance premium tax credit to purchase insurance through the Health Insurance Marketplace
If you miss a payment, you have 30 days before Horizon will hold and not pay any health care claim and will notify these providers accordingly. You will also be responsible for the full payment of prescription drug costs until your premium is paid in full.
Once your account is paid in full:
- We will process eligible claims.
- You can submit a claim form to be reimbursed for the covered costs of prescription drugs that you paid for at the time your account was delinquent. To apply for reimbursement of these costs, complete the Prescription Drug Claim Form. Then, return it to the address indicated on the form.
Insurance Bought Through GetCoveredNJ (the state-based health insurance exchange) without the Advanced Premium Tax Credit (APTC) or Medicare Supplement
If you do not pay your premium by the due date, you have 31 days to make a payment in full before you lose your coverage. Your coverage will be terminated back to the date you paid your coverage through. For example, if the last time you paid your premium was on September 1, for coverage during the month of September, your coverage will terminate effective October 1.
Insurance Bought Directly from Horizon including Small Groups (2-50 Employees)
If you do not pay your premium by the due date, you have 30 days to make a payment in full before you lose your coverage. Your coverage will be terminated back to the date you paid your coverage through. For example, if the last time you paid your premium was on September 1, for coverage during the month of September, your coverage will terminate effective October 1.
