Every Shot Counts: Sharing the Facts About the COVID-19 Vaccines
Applies to: All Markets
Now that eligibility for COVID-19 vaccination has expanded to all people ages 16 and older, we’re a step closer to slowing the spread of the virus. The approved COVID-19 vaccines are proven effective in preventing infection from the virus. However, we understand that our members may continue to have questions or concerns about the COVID-19 vaccines.
In a previous Brief Notes, we introduced our digital brochure, Every shot counts — the COVID-19 vaccines, which was created to answer members’ questions about the COVID-19 vaccines. We hope you will review the brochure and share it with your Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey (Horizon BCBSNJ) customers.
Get the recommended number of doses
Like many vaccines, getting the required doses of the COVID-19 vaccine is crucial to it working properly. Two of the approved COVID-19 vaccines — the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines — provide strong protection against COVID-19. However, two doses are needed to get the full protective benefit, and the timing between these doses is important. The Johnson & Johnson vaccine also provides strong protection against COVID-19, but requires only one dose.
The health risks from getting COVID-19 are far greater than any risks from the COVID-19 vaccines. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration urge everyone to be vaccinated against COVID-19 as soon as they are eligible.
Side effects may occur
As with any vaccine, people may experience side effects, such as soreness at the injection site, headache, chills or fatigue for a day or two after getting the shot.
For those who get a two-dose vaccination, the side effects may be somewhat stronger after the second shot. This is a sign that the body is building protection, and the side effects are unlikely to last more than a few days.
Once fully vaccinated, people will be far less likely to become seriously ill from COVID-19.
Continue steps to prevent infection
In addition to getting a COVID-19 vaccine, we encourage everyone to continue protecting themselves and others by wearing a mask, practicing social distancing, washing their hands often and staying home if they are sick.
Providing information to help our members take care of themselves and their loved ones — that’s how we are here for our members, now and always.
