Often when we think of exposure to loud noise, we think of a concert, sporting event or fireworks display. But did you know that everyday activities such as using earbuds or headphones; using lawn equipment and power tools; or even children’s toys can damage your hearing?

Here are four ways to protect your hearing for life:

  1. Turn down the volume. You can typically tell if the noise around you is too loud if you or others need to shout to be heard or cannot understand each other even at arm’s length away.
  2. Take breaks from the noise or walk away. The longer the exposure, the greater the risk for hearing loss.
  3. Avoid loud, noisy activities and places. Hearing loss can result over time from damage caused by repeated exposures to loud sounds. The louder the sound, the shorter the amount of time it takes for hearing loss to occur.
  4. Use hearing protection. When you can’t avoid loud noise, use hearing protection. It only takes a single exposure to excessive noise to suffer permanent hearing loss.
